ABOUT THEATRE AT THE TANK
The Tank supports a dynamic, innovative theater season each year. We serve companies and solo artists whether they’re creating new devised work, puppetry, clowning, physical theater, new plays, new productions of classical plays, or works in development. Depending on the needs of the artist, The Tank presents readings, workshops, and full productions in our black box theater.
Past theater artists who have performed at The Tank over the years include: Immediate Medium, Mike Daisey, Alex Timbers, Amy Herzog, Tommy Smith, Lucy Alibar, Reggie Watts, Zoe Aja Moore, Split Knuckle Theatre, and the claque.

CURRENT THEATRE SERIES
THE BECHDEL GROUP
The Bechdel Group is a New York City based group that hosts a series of readings and discussions of new work and works in progress. Our mission is to challenge the accepted portrayal of women on stage. Our goals are to: promote writers writing for women, create more roles for women, and foster an active and engaged community of actors, playwrights, directors, dramaturges, and theatre lovers.
The Bechdel Group’s Workshop Series is a series of readings and discussions around new work in progress. We invite all actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, and theatre lovers to join us for a festive, friendly, informal community evening of discussion around new work.
FAST & FURIOUS
Live performance exists to serve as America’s cultural conscience. As artists, it is our responsibility to make work that shines a light on things when they’re wrong, celebrate them when they’re right, and model alternative possibilities. This kind of work can change hearts and minds. Our ability to act fast and create work quickly in response to events, policies, and general dumpster fires has never been more crucial, as we participate in building the language of resistance.
Everything made for a Fast & Furious show will be in response to events in the prior 7 days leading the up to the show. It will be fast, and it will almost certainly be FURIOUS.
Open to work in all disciplines! Looking for pieces somewhere between 3 and 7 minutes. Minimal tech, potentially some rehearsal hours subject to availability. Want to participate in the next Fast & Furious? Email firstname.lastname@example.org!
NECROMANCERS OF THE PUBLIC DOMAIN
Each month, Theater of the Apes plucks a long forgotten volume from the shelves of the New York Society Library and resurrect it as a low budget variety show.
In partnership with The Tank, LIT Council is a development intensive for Male Playwrights of Color. During their time with the Council (September 2018 through April 2019). The intent of LIT Council is to provide an affinity space for male-identifying playwrights of color to create and interrogate this specific identity while engaging with their creative process. Writers will develop a new play during this time and will also be in conversation, both within the group and through outside expertise, in regards to how our social locations shape our work, both in regards to challenges, privileges, leadership, expectations, and more. The program will culminate in a reading workshop of each participant’s play, and in order to further promote collaboration and communication, each play will be attached to a female director of color, chosen from a group of professionals and mentors, who will be an active presence throughout the process. Facilitated by Beto O’Byrne and Akin Salawu.
RULE OF 7X7
7 PLAYS | 7 WRITERS | 7 RULES
RULE OF is an ongoing series that premieres 7 brand-new 10 minute plays by 7 different writers. For each show, every playwright comes up with one rule, then the 7 playwrights create new plays using all 7 rules. Some past rules have been: "Bright sunshine." and "Somewhere on page one: a back-handed compliment, followed by ten seconds of silence." and "'This reminds me of the time I (an action) with (a person).'"

Tank-aret is a new monthly cabaret series in The Tank's new home curated by musical theater writing team EllaRose Chary and Brandon James Gwinn (Dramatists Guild Fellows, Ars Nova Uncharted Residents, Cotton Candy and Cocaine, TL;DR: Thelma Louise; Dyke Remix). Every month Tank-aret will feature an evening of exciting new work by artists not traditionally represented in cabaret and musical theater spaces. The intention is to lift up the voices of women, queer and trans artists, artists of color, differently abled artists, and anyone else who has some cabaret magic to make but is usually not given the space to take risks and bite off more than they can chew.
This series presents brand-new one-night-only theater pieces about how dumb this is, spearheaded by Tank Co-Artistic Director Rosalind Grush.
