ADA|AVA

A Co-Production with 3-Legged Dog

About the Show

Bereaved of her twin sister Ava, septuagenarian Ada solitarily marks time in the patterns of a life built for two. However, a traveling carnival and a trip to a mirror maze plunges her into a journey across the thresholds of life and death. Set in a landscape of the New England gothic, Ada/Ava uses a story of the fantastic and super natural to explore mourning and melancholy, self and other.

Shows will be at 3-Legged Dog, 80 Greenwich Street, Manhattan.

Critics' Pick!
“Such creations of young artists, for whom boundaries of tone and discipline are increasingly irrelevant, are paradoxically both nostalgic and prescient. Welcome to a brave new sensibility that’s corny and cutting-edge, backward and forward looking, at the same time.”
– Ben Brantley, The New York Times

Critics' Pick!
“The virtuosic group makes elegant live-scored “silent films” that evoke sweetness, poignancy and fright. Above all, Manual Cinema's artists make tangible the care they take; we almost feel the courtliness with which they touch each of their fragile creations.”
– Helen Shaw, Time Out New York

Critics' Pick!
“ADA/AVA fills a liminal space between the highly technical and the highly emotional, between a precise well-oiled masterpiece and a casual theatrical experiment, between cinema and theatre. The sheer volume of detail that each performer, musician, and designer has poured into this production inspires nothing less than pure wonderment.”
Theater is Easy

"It is highly unlikely that this season will produce anything as odd and altogether original as the experiment in puppetry and shadow play known as ADA/AVA; that it is also beguiling is the icing on the cake.”
Lighting and Stage America

"...spectacular... ingenious... awe-inspiring... a true must-see..."
Stagebuddy

– Jaime Robinson, Fast Company

“Ingenious multimedia performance”
– David Cote, Future of Storytelling
