public affairs

The Tank opens its doors to progressive public affairs and community-oriented events, that promote free expression, new ideas and civic engagement. Guest speakers and panels, community discussions and presentations and inclusive celebrations invite the public to make The Tank a modern Town Square where new, provocative and even conflicting ideas are given center stage. To submit a proposal to public affairs at The Tank, please email Justin Krebs at justin@thetanknyc.org.

Two Nights of Political Dance: Alexandra Beller's "us"

Fri, 08/22/2008 - 8:30pm
$15

In honor of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, The Tank presents two nights of political dance to kick off a week of convention watch-parties and politically themed programming.

Alexandra Beller's 'us'begins with the premise that patriotism can be an addiction that blinds us to the truth. Like any drug, nationalism can alter the chemistry of the mind, obliterating compassion, consciousness, and curiosity. In a series of duets with anthropomorphized objects (including a mop and an inflatable sex doll) Beller blurs the lines of dance and theater using text, song, virtuosic dance, and original sound design. The work was expanded through a residency at HERE Arts Center from 2006-2007.

"Beller makes us rethink the symbols and ideas of patriotism to which we are daily exposed, and calls on us to question our own relationship with the U.S., love, war, bigotry, hate, sex, the French: Beller covers it all with sophistication and a full throttle performance."
