Doug Theriault and Tandem Electrics

Thu, 08/07/2008 - 9:30pm
$5

A solo concert by Doug Theriault, an incredible instrument designer and musician from Portland, Oregon. Working with a reconfigured guitar/controller and audio software, Doug creates music that is exquisitely dense and musical recalling the work of Yasunao Tone and Xenakis with it's intense architecture, fragmentation, and physicality. Tandem Electrics is a New York electronics duo with Richard Kamerman and Reed Evan Rosenberg on electronics and programming. Their music is beautiful. Also, tonight a very rare meeting of ALBERTJZ, having not played together since the 2006 recording of their recent 4.5 hour release on Rasbliutto/Set-Projects. The strings and electronics quartet will play an entirely improvised, and shorter, piece of music.

In honor of this auspicious date for fans of electronic music, The Tank has a killer line-up of circuit bent synths, electro-insanity, and the album release party of synth-punky rock band Last Year's Model!

Burnkit 2600

Thom Uliasz and Justin Emerson have been experimenting with electronic music together since 1997. Combining circuit-bending and other modifying techniques with more traditional instruments, Burnkit2600 represents the duo's evolving interest in creating exotic soundscapes and chunky distorted grooves for adventurous ears.

Last Year's Model
One part machine precision and one part nervous breakdown, LAST YEAR'S MODEL
makes music for the club inside the Commodore 64 inside your head. They abandon the
traditional idea of rhythm guitar in favor of 8 bit rhythm synths and hooky lead guitar lines,
then add new wave / electro basslines and a combination of programmed dance beats and
live punk drums to achive their spastic pop sound.

The band has just fi nished recording their new album, "NEW WAVE OF ATTACK MODE
ROBOT POP", which will be released in June. They are also preparing for their second east
coast tour. Recordings by Last Year's Model are available at cdbaby.com, itunes, and other
digital download sites. For more information about upcoming performances, please visit

Mr. Manic

Mr. Manic is a six armed, transluscent mutant slug with UV reactive organs from the neon planet Funkorama in a distant crevice of the galaxy of Andromeda. He was sent to Earth in the form of a rock star with a band of Funkonauts, on a mission to gather information for a planned space invasion. However, he was sent to the future year of 1983 where he lived for a while, new waving, beatboxing, pop locking, and synth-popping until re-establishing contact with Funkorama. He was then sent back further in time to the still-incorrect year of 1991, where he lived for a while, gang banging, drive-by'ing, raving, and new jack swinging until he once again was put back in touch with his home planet. This time, he was sent even FURTHER back in time, to the correct year of 2007 where he has been ever since, completing his mission by throwing neon-glow sludge parties and perpetrating ray-gun drive-by's in preparation for Funkorama's takeover of planet Earth.

Nullsleep, Adventure, and Sabastian Boaz

Sat, 08/16/2008 - 9:30pm
$10

On Saturday, August 16th lower Manhattan will face a relentless onslaught of electronic abuse and synth seduction from three rogue agents: relativistic heavy squarewave collider NULLSLEEP [NYC], neo-baroque electro-pop whirlwind ADVENTURE [Baltimore], and drunken distorted synth punk SABASTIAN BOAZ [NYC]. Optical cortex hacker NOTENDO [NYC] will run visual interference for the duration of the action. They will be holding hostages at DCTV, 87 Lafayette St. (at White St.) and demanding a ransom of $5 per person. All ages. No mercy.

Nullsleep creates powerful romantic pop using repurposed low-bit electronics in a relentless search for new ways to circumvent their limitations. Bittersweet melodies and driving, rhythmic pulses are coaxed out of small plastic devices to produce a surprisingly intense sound. In 1999 Nullsleep cofounded 8bitpeoples, a collective of artists interested in the audio-visual aesthetics of early home computers and video game consoles. Based in New York City, Nullsleep has performed extensively throughout North America, Europe and Asia, including the 20-date International Chiptune Resistance world tour in 2006.

Adventure is 24 year-old North Carolina native and recent Baltimore transplant Benny Boeldt. His ultra-melodic synth compositions pull from his earliest exposure to video games. But it's not just retro video game music. Mix in the kitschy Moogy sound of Hot Butter's "Popcorn", the saturated disco-theatrics of late seventies electro-pop acts like Sparks and Yellow Magic Orchestra, and a penchant for Eastern European diminished scales and you've come pretty close to Adventure's accelerated baroque sound.

Sabastian Boaz is known as a circuit bender, musician, and all around nut-case. He's been performing around New York for many years but recently opted to sell the majority of his equipment, and play guitar in a band. By booking this show, he has had about a month to come up with how he'll perform, it might be with circuit bent toys or old 60's reel-to-reel tape decks. Who knows? Apparently he doesn't.
