The BENT 2006 Festival is produced in partnership with Harvestworks' Benders and Coders Series and presented in part by Periscope Entertainment. Periscope Entertainment is a Los Angeles based film and television company that prides itself on supporting independent thought and innovative creation.

BENT 2006 is presented at 15 Nassau, a venue of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Space donated by Silverstein Properties.

An Introduction to Circuit Bending

The workshop will give a brief intro to the anti-ideas of bending together with some 'show and tell' examples.

Building Custom Circuits for Bent Instruments!
with Justin Jordan of 3Xfx

In this workshop we will build a custom LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) circuit and integrate it into a bent instrument. We also cover techniques to design, build, and integrate other circuits, including the following: analog ring modulators, oscillators, active filters, and summing amplifiers.

Building a Square Wave Tone Generator
with Patrick Bobilin

This workshop utilizes a pulse generating circuit to create a square wave tone generator. Presentation will also include easy direction on how to turn this tone generator into a simple synthesizer. Beginners and pros are welcome to learn more about the 555 timer circuit, arguably one of the most versitile integrated circuits around.

Virtual circuit bending: Designing bend-able Max/MSP/Jitter emulation externals.

In this workshop, I'll talk about how to poke, prod, and manipulate emulated video game consoles by leveraging the Max/MSP/Jitter programming environment.

Voice Changing Megaphone Bending Wokshop
with Peter Edwards

SPACE LIMITED - PRE-REGISTER HERE
The megaphone in it’s original form has three voice changing settings; alien, robot and spaceman. Workshop participants will learn how to alter the clock speed (pitch) of these effects and will install a variable pitch control in the ‘phones housing. Instructions for installing audio input and output jacks will be available for those who are interested, but will not be covered as a group. Audio jacks are not included with the lab fee but will be available through the tank.


SATURDAY April 22

A Day at the Circuits
A great opportunity for kids of all ages to come out and try their hand at circuit bending. Bring some old electronic toys from home (ones that make noise!) or just use some of ours.

Building the One-Bit Groove Box

In this workshoppe, we'll assemble One-Bit Groove Boxes from kits. The One-Bit Groove Box is a new, portable electronic instrument inspired by Atari 2600, the late 1970s video game system. It fits inside a reused VHS cassette box!

Installing the RCA Patchbay Mod to a Casio SK
with Tablebeast

I will go through step by step how to installl the basic mod and I will also provide advice on other mods for tha Casio SK series including MIDI and CV control, futher bending mods and controllers, etc. I will also demonstrate the best ways to interract and 'play' the mod once installed.

Hardware Hacking Workshop
with Nic Collins

Workshop in making contact mikes, sniffing electromagnetic fields with coils, and building a Victorian Oscillator with nothing more than a speaker, a battery, and some rusty metal.


SUNDAY April 23

How to Make a Robot Sing from the Heart: the Insanium, Speech Chips, Vocal Synthesis and 'Bending By Design'
with Lorin Edwin Parker

We will listen to, discuss and play with speech synthesis chips looking specifically at the Speakjet chip and the Insanium Synthesizer. Participants will discover how to make a chip say absolutely anything, sing, glitch out, and even become a new ilk of synthesizer. Participants will be encouraged to play Parker's Insanium instrument and experiment with a Speakjet chip on a "development board".
